The Under Siege Collection

"...Ygartua takes you on a journey to the imaginary global kingdom of COVID-19.  He envisages the Coronavirus with teammates (similar to that of the pilot fish that help the shark) spreading this dreaded virus from one city to the next. We have a predator that came from the depths of the cosmos and took over the order of man. We are its prisoners. The Predator is our lord and master. It has rendered us helpless. It is out there, like soldiers free to travel the world, but they will soon meet their fate, intervention will be upon them ..."

YGARTUA’S FANTASY SERIES (Under Siege)

“…Ygartua transforms, diverts and reconstructs conventional reality to give us a new and unique vision of the world.  Often surrealism and fantasy art is explained by suggesting that the artist, under a spell of hypnosis, can then self induce these lucid dreams as a source of artistic inspiration.  The debate surrounding the difficulty of transcribing a dream onto the canvas without the use of human interpretation is ongoing amongst Surrealist scholars and artists.

Either Ygartua is constantly in a dream-like state when he is awake, or he just has a vivid imagination that he can tap into at any time he chooses…”

In Honour of the People of the World – “Alone We Can Do So Little. Together We Can Do So Much” Helen Keller

"...Once again, Paul has felt the need to express himself through his eternal desire to portray the People of the World, showing their individuality, yet, the strength of being together, working towards a solution to win the war on the coronavirus pandemic. A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people. We must honour all people of the world, understand their culture and reach out for everlasting peace. Without an interest in other cultures, we not only become disinterested, but we remain ignorant.

Paul Ygartua’s most renowned mural A WORLD UNITED, his union of the world with our five races, adorned the walls of the United Nations Pavilion during Expo86 Vancouver, Canada. The World Expos are a time to celebrate who you are and United Nations celebrated the people of the world, what we have in common, what we admire and what we want to learn – promoting our developing relations among nations, maintaining worldwide peace and security..."

Artist willing to donate to hospital.

"...We Honour Our Heroic Warriors, their sacrifice – it cannot be taken lightly, it is extraordinary, their efforts, their willingness to face this battle with the courage of a soldier going to war.

As an artist I have been drawn into the deepest depths of my imagination to express to my audience a desire to connect, to give a message–again it comes in many different forms, from fantasy to realism..."

"DEADLY INVADERS"

  Acrylic on canvas
60" x 48″

"...The COVID-19 virus is humanity’s newest foe, with the potential to prematurely end millions of lives. To control this new CORONAVIRUS we need to understand it. Labs around the world are now working around the clock in a bid to know their enemy. Throughout history there are masterworks of tragedy and introspection, which delve into the deepest realms of paranoid human solitude—it is often during these extraordinary times that one becomes consumed with self reflection and self expression – with an obligation to create and give voice to your inner thoughts..."

"BIRTH OF EVIL - THE DREAM (fantasy/surrealism) SERIES"
Acrylic on canvas
72" x 40"
$7,000.00

"...YGARTUA TRANSFORMS, DIVERTS AND RECONSTRUCTS CONVENTIONAL REALITY TO GIVE US A NEW AND UNIQUE VISION OF THE WORLD.
Ygartua has simplified the dream-like-state, he says.  "I do it while I am awake, that way, I have no problem with recall.
I contemplate and try to imagine different situations, unique ideas, unusual creatures that could be working together with the virus, similar to that of the pilotfish that assist the sharks in their close relationship as the clean-up crew.  I like to reveal the darker side with a positive in the same painting.  It is like a chess game, the game of life. The name of the game is to win, to survive.

The objective is to win, but the challenge is designing and then acting out a strategy to achieve that goal.  As in life, you must constantly evaluate and change your playing strategy.

I approach this series with the objective to win.  The challenge is upon us, it will be faced and conquered."

 "GUERNICA --The COVID-19 SPECTATORS"
Acrylic on Canvas
84" x 48"
$14,000.00

“Guernica – as the subject matter relates to the Basque Country and the Civil War it is personal and a topic of conversation for all Basques.”

"...Guernica is a large 1937 oil painting on canvas by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso.  One of Picasso’s best known works, Guernica is regarded by many art critics as one of the most moving and powerful anti-war paintings in history.  It is exhibited in the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid

Ygartua’s journey to the Imaginary Global Kingdom of COVID-19 takes a turn, now visiting some of the most prestigious museums in the world.   “Guernica” is on exhibition at the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain.

PAUL YGARTUA was greatly influenced by Picasso in many aspects - his heritage is Basque, his father attained political asylum in England due to the Spanish Civil War and felt the personal suffering of an expatriate.  It was the same deep rejection of ones patriarchal country that Picasso felt when he left his homeland and rejected his country because of the atrocities of the civil war. Picasso reacted with retaliation when he created his masterpiece Guernica.  Commissioned by the Paris government for  the 1937 World Fair in Paris, it expressed his deepest sentiment towards all people at times of bereavement..."
